Behavior Driven development (BDD) Framework for Agile Test Automation

Is automation testing adoptable for Agile? What is next generation test automation methodology – Most of the Enterprise clients are following scrum product development. Historically, test automation has not met with the level of success that it could in development .Most often this is the result of misconceived perceptions of the effort and resources necessary to implement a successful, long-lasting automation framework development. Why is this, we might ask? Well, realizing that we must develop reusable test strategies is no different than the reusability concerns of any good application development project. As we set out on our task of automating test, we must keep these past lessons forefront.

Here we go for above all answers -- BDD framework , We should focus our automation framework to deal with the common components that make up our unique automation framework that can useful in easy development of testcases as such as Manual tester can do with Library keywords

To deal with this approach we adopted the libraries which can support for different application for different technologies.


What is it?

BDD (Behavior-Driven Development) is a generic test automation framework for agile testing and is an essential practice applied by successful Agile and Scrum teams.

BDD testing capabilities can be extended by various test libraries implemented either with Python or Java, and users can create new and extend keywords from existing keywords using the same syntax that is used for creating test cases

There are many extensions for testing different platforms e.g. Selenium Library for testing web applications.

These libraries are best implemented in Python, but using Java or .NET is also possible.

Easy-to-use tabular test data syntax and utilizes the keyword-driven testing approach.

• Provides a command line interface and XML based outputs for integration into existing build infrastructure (continuous integration systems).

• Provides support for Selenium for web testing, Java GUI testing, running processes, Telnet, SSH, and so on.

• Remote library interface enables distributed testing and implementing test libraries in any programming language.

• Provides tagging to categorize and select test cases to be executed.

• Has built-in support for variables, practical particularly for testing in different environments

Web - A web testing library that uses for web applications

DB - Another library for database testing. Implemented with Python and works also on Jython.

SSH & Telnet - A test library that enables SSH and Telnet.

HTTP - test library using livetest & Requests

Web services - This is a test library for the Robot Framework, which allows running and checking SoapUI test. Whatever SoapUI can do (functional tests, load tests etc.) can (will) be wrapped through this test library.

OS – Operating System is Robot Framework's standard library that enables various operating system related tasks to be performed in the system where Robot Framework is running.

Windows - A Windows GUI testing library for Robot Framework (AutoItLibrary)

Mobile - use SikuliLibrary with Robot Framework (Sikuli and Robot Framework Integration - This is not really a library but these instructions explain how to integrate Sikuli tool with Robot Framework)

MD5 checksum - Verify Integrity of any software downloads

Now a days we will download the various softwares from different websites,but some of the downloads will corrupted . So we unable to identify whether we downloaded right software or not.

To verify the integrity of  software downloads we will use MD5 Checksum tool .

Here is one example to check the integrity of  HP UFT  11.5
software download by  MD5 Checksum tool .

Here is  MD5 Checksum method  on how to verify the integrity of your downloaded UFT  11.5 ISO(or a zip) file -

Step 1:Download MD5 Checksum from this link MD5 Checksum  . Its freeware

Step 2: Browse to the location where you have stored the downloaded UFT ISO file.

Step 3: Enter the MD5 Checksum for the version of QTP/UFT you wish to check. List is given below. 

Here is a list of MD5 Checksum for various versions of QTP and the corresponding downloaded file names.

  • UFT 11.5 : 32F56BD3F60CC4FAD15F403351C3B15C  (File name Software_QTP_11.0_English_T6510-15080.iso)

  • QTP 11.00 : 4AED13FF8EB6E7E0B4BF209C814905AF (File name is Software_QTP_11.0_English_T6510_15066.iso)

Download & Installtion of HP UFT 11.5 (Unified Functional Testing)

HP UFT 11.5 (Unified Functional Testing) and QTP 11.5 download & installation steps:

Now HP finally  released  UFT 11.5 for  automation customers & lovers . HP UFT 11.5 trail version (The trial period of the software is 30 days) is available in the HP official site , its not for commercial purpose. HP UFT 11.5 download details marked in the below steps .

Step - by - step download & installation of  UFT(Unified Functional Testing) 11.5 and QTP 11.5  here .

Step 1: To download hp uft 11.5 , Go to HP UFT 11.5 download location and download the UFT 11.5 installation file

Step 2 : Click on HP UFT ‘Trial software’ and then click on the link ‘HP Unified Functional Testing 11.50 CC English SW E-Media Evaluation’

Step 3 : Enter personal details and click Next for  UFT 11.5 download

Step 4 : Click on agree to Evaluation Software Terms of Use for UFT  download

Step 5 : Click the download button of the evaluation version of UFT 11.5 ,  after download you will get an ISO image file.

Step 6 : Verify the downloaded file is corrupted or genuine one by  " MD5 Check " software .

Step 7 :  After completion of MD5 Checksum steps mentioned here and come back to Step #8

Step 8 :  Downloaded UTF 11.5 ISO image file is an archive file , To extract contents, right click on the UTF 11.5 ISO image –> 7-Zip –> Extract to “Software_HP_UFT_11.50_English_T6510-15080”
(The easiest way I know to extract contents from ISO file is by using a free utility software called 7zip which can be downloaded here.)

HP UFT 11.5 and HP QTP 11.5 Installation steps :

HP Quick test Professional 11.5 is comes with HP Unified Functional Testing Software suite . ie.When ever we install HP UFT , it will come with HP QTP 11.5 .

Software Pr-requisites :

• IE 7or IE8 or IE9
• Windows XP SP2 or XP SP3 or Vista SP2 or Windows 7 SP1 .
• UFT 11.5 does not support Windows 8

[ UFT_PAM.pdf for the complete list of compatible software. This pdf is available under the same folder where Setup.exe is present at Step #2 ]

• Upgrading from QTP 9.5 or above versions, the installation process will automatically uninstall the older version and install UFT. iF upgrading from QTP 9.2 you need to manually uninstall QTP 9.2 before upgrading to this version.


HP UFT 11.5 installation steps : 

Here we are providing  HP uft 11.5 installation  steps for your reference:

Step 1: Extracted the contents as shown in Step #8 above, go inside the folder Software_HP_UFT_11.50_English_T6510-15080 and double click on Setup.exe file to start the installation.

Step 2: Choose default options on the next few screens. [Note: Along with default Active Add-in, Visual Basic Add-in and Web Add-in, UFT 11.5 setup comes with the following 13 add-ins which can be installed per your requirement: Delphi, Flex, Java, .NET, Oracle, PeopleSoft, PowerBuilder, Qt, SAP Solutions, Siebel, Stingray, TE, Visual Age]

Step 3: The place where it asks for QTP license keys, click on Cancel button.

Now Installation is completed successfully for  HP UFT 11.5

Download UFT 11.5 trail version

On Dec 06, 2012 at HP Discover 2012 event , HP has released the long awaited HP Unified Functional Testing (UFT) 11.5 . We will explore the new features of  UFT 11.5 by HP UFT 11.5 trial version .Now HP has released the HP Unified Functional Testing (UFT) 11.5 trail version in the market for automation customers.We can use UFT 11.5 trial version for 30 days only.

With this UFT 11.5 version , we can know the QTP 11.5 (Quick Test Professional) features which is now called UFT and includes also API testing (or Service Test) apart from the familiar GUI testing. This version is a step in the correct direction towards a much more techie IDE (based on the open source Sharp Development), with better intellisense and an improved MDI and GUI, that is intended to improve user experience and enable automation developers to tackle the unfolding challenges of our era – more and more Web and Mobile on the technological side, and Agile development and ALM usage on the methodological side. Unified Functional Testing (UFT) is  HP's Automation Software Testing Suite which is combine of three different components ( QTP, QC and ST )previously each component available as separate tool , Now 3 tools in a single suite is called Unified Functional Testing (UFT) tool with  HP UFT 11.5 version .
Developers can also test all aspects of a mulch-tiered application from a single interface & This suite will also offer a cloud service that will allow developers to test mobile applications using UFT 11.5 .
"In past three years, we've been seeing huge shifts in how our customer base deliver applications," said Roi Carmel, HP senior director of product management for application lifecycle management. "Applications used to be delivered every year, or every year and a half. Now they are delivered on an iterative basis, sometimes every month."

It's time to bring much awaited HP Unified Functional Testing 11.5 (QTP + Service Test = UFT) has been released today (Dec 06, 2012) at HP Discover 2012 event.

HP Unified Functional Testing (UFT) 11.5 provides automated functional and regression testing services for development teams that build enterprise applications. The software generates documentation of the testing run-throughs and keeps a library of how individual applications work.
UFT 11.5 simplifies the testing process by combining a number of different tests into one screen, Carmel said.In prior versions of UFT, developers could test an application's interface and then invoke triggers to set off other HP tools -- namely HP Functional Testing (QTP) and HP Service Test -- to test the program's operations at the database and service layers. Now, developers can test, from a single console, all three layers: the interface, the service layer and the database layer.
This unified testing brings a number of benefits, Carmel explained. It cuts down on possible errors because multiple scripts no longer have to be coordinated for effective testing. It also allows developers to test the whole software stack, not just a single layer, giving them deeper insight into possible issues and potential improvements that can be made.

The consolidation of features also better supports continuous integration, a practice of frequently testing the software being developed, through the use of tools such as Jenkins, to which UFT can be connected.
UFT 11.5 also includes a new patented recognition technology that can scan applications and document how they operate. While HP maintains a library of how many application frameworks and connective technologies operate, the new insight object recognition feature can document obscure programs not already covered by HP.

The new feature is a set of algorithms that "automatically recognizes user interfaces just like a human does," Carmel said. "It can look at a user interface and really understand what it does -- what a text box is, what a button does."
The updated software will also work in conjunction with a new cloud service HP will offer to allow developers to test mobile devices. HP will maintain emulations of the Google Android, Apple iOS, Microsoft Windows Phone and other mobile OSes, against which developers can test their code directly from within UFT 11.5 itself.

HP has also updated Sprinter, a tool designed to aid manual software testing. Sprinter 11.5 will allow users to export their test macros to UFT, in cases where large portions of a test could be automated. The software also can highlight spelling errors and check for localization and compliance issues.
UFT works with HP's Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) software for managing software projects. It is a part of the company's HP IT Performance Suite, which can be used to help manager enterprise software.

HP will explain more about the new features of UFT 11.5 during an online seminar to be held Nov. 28. The company did not disclose pricing information for these new products.
